Police operations against the Islamic State group are frequent in

Turkey

, a country neighboring Syria and Iraq, reports RFI correspondent in Istanbul,

Anne Andlauer

. The terrorist organization has long had numerous cells throughout Turkey. In the last ten months alone, authorities say they have arrested more than 2,900 people suspected of being linked to the jihadist group.

However, the raids seem to have gained momentum after the Moscow attack. Since Sunday, Turkish police have arrested 187 people. Ankara has not publicly made the link with this attack, but security sources have confirmed that two of the suspects in the attack in Russia had stayed several weeks in Turkey, in Istanbul, before leaving by plane on March 2. Turkish officials argue that these men were not the subject of an arrest warrant.

Criticized in the first years of the war in Syria for having turned a blind eye to the passage through its territory of foreign fighters who left to swell the ranks of Daesh, Turkey also recalls that for ten years it has been one of the main targets of the group terrorist, particularly its branch in Central Asia, the Islamic State in Khorasan.
