On March 26, 2024, the Chongqing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court publicly sentenced Zhou Jiankun, former deputy secretary and vice chairman of the Guizhou Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, for accepting bribes. The defendant Zhou Jiankun was sentenced to life imprisonment for accepting bribes, deprived of political rights for life, and sentenced to personal confiscation. All properties; the property and the interest obtained from Zhou Jiankun’s bribery that have been seized and detained will be recovered and turned over to the state treasury, and any shortfall will continue to be recovered.
The trial found that: from 1999 to 2022, the defendant Zhou Jiankun used his position as deputy secretary and mayor of the Duyun Municipal Party Committee, Guizhou Province, secretary of the Duyun Municipal Party Committee, deputy director of the Guizhou Provincial Economic and Information Commission, and deputy secretary-general of the Guizhou Provincial People's Government. The conveniences for the positions of deputy secretary and mayor of the Anshun Municipal Party Committee of Guizhou Province, secretary of the Anshun Municipal Party Committee, secretary of the Bijie Municipal Party Committee of Guizhou Province, member and vice chairman of the Party Leadership Group of the Guizhou Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, deputy secretary and vice chairman of the Party Leadership Group, and the convenient conditions for the formation of their powers or status are Relevant units and individuals provided assistance in business operations, project contracting, project approval and other matters, and illegally received property equivalent to more than 108 million yuan.
The Chongqing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court held that the defendant Zhou Jiankun's behavior constituted the crime of accepting bribes, the amount was extremely huge, and it caused extremely heavy losses to the interests of the country and the people. In view of the fact that Zhou Jiankun truthfully confessed his crimes after arriving at the case, took the initiative to explain some of the bribery facts that were not known to the supervisory authorities, confessed his guilt and repented, and actively returned the stolen goods. Most of the property obtained from bribery and its interest have been seized in the case, and he has performed major meritorious service by reporting the crimes of others. If there are statutory or discretionary circumstances that warrant a lenient punishment, he may be given a lighter punishment in accordance with the law. The court then made the above judgment.
