Presidential election in Senegal: while awaiting official results, the Diomaye Faye camp shows its confidence

In Senegal, will there be a second round or a winner from the first round of the presidential election? For the moment, no official results have been announced. Raw results from polling stations, published by the Senegalese press, give an advantage to the opposition candidate, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, placing him ahead of former Prime Minister, Amadou Ba, the day after the presidential election. Senegal is therefore still in uncertainty this morning.

The first official results of the

presidential election

in

Senegal

at the department level must be published from today. The government candidate Amadou Ba promised to comment on the results at midday. But in the meantime, since yesterday evening, the Senegalese have had access to raw results, collected polling station by polling station. These results place the opposition candidate, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, in the lead. Furthermore, at least 7 of the 17 presidential candidates have already recognized the victory of the ex-Pastef candidate.

But on the side of the majority candidate, Amadou Ba, we believe that it is too early to celebrate. According to the majority candidate's team's estimates, based on 30% of the vote count, there should be a second round. A statement from the two main candidates was awaited until late at night. They were finally postponed until today.

A peaceful voting day

We will have to wait a little longer before having official results. But in the meantime, Senegal experienced an almost exemplary day of voting throughout the country. The Senegalese voted calmly and without major incident. The Senegalese were happy to be able to exercise their right to vote, after these last weeks of uncertainty. As explained by this voter seen in a polling station in the center of Dakar.

For him, it’s “

only contentment, at the fact that the elections are organized. With this delay, we all had a problem, we were all a little worried. But, the fact that it happened, we know that it is good for the country. It will calm things down, they let the population make their choice and exercise their civil rights. At least it is encouraging and to be congratulated.

In most of the country, polling stations opened and closed on time. The participation rate remains to be confirmed. It is not certain that Senegal will do better than the 66% participation in 2019.

The only downside is the fact that only the main candidates deployed their agents in the polling stations to monitor the vote and collect the reports of the results, reports which are now compiled in the departmental vote counting commissions. . These departmental results will be published on Monday or Tuesday, before a final compilation in Dakar and a publication of provisional overall results no later than Friday.
