, Bassirou Diomaye Faye was elected president of the country in the first round, his opponent, the candidate of the outgoing government, Amadou Ba, having admitted his defeat.

The day after the vote, a few activists met in the Dieupeul district, at the headquarters of the coalition that brought him to power, to savor the victory. “

We are really happy to have elected a young president of our generation, someone like us

 ,” says a supporter at

Théa Ollivier

’s microphone .

Show African youth that there is another path to change

Another agrees: “

I feel proud, really proud to have witnessed a historic moment because it is the first time in Senegal that we have such a young president, who is truly sovereignist. It is also to show African youth

that there is another way for change, that it is not the way of weapons, that it is not the way of a putsch. There is the electoral, democratic route, which is possible.

 »

A third adds: “

We believe in President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and the fact that we will have a better Senegal with him.

We expect it to bring

justice, to create jobs, for the resources we have – we have gas, we have oil, we have zircon, we have all of that – for all of these resources to come back.

»

A last one indicates: “

I expect him to reset the institutions, to restore justice, to put in place the social project put forward by the Pastef party, so that our populations can have a better standard of living.

Amadou Ba has admitted his defeat: here is democracy!

»

At the headquarters of Amadou Ba's party, the Alliance for the Republic, the atmosphere was quite different, even if the supporters of the former Prime Minister assure that they are not too disappointed. “

No, it’s the best who won

,” reacted one of them to

Léa-Lisa Westerhoff

’s microphone .

We are all Senegalese! I am proud of Amadou Ba. And the stability of the country, that’s what interests me, that interests us

 .”

A second insists: “

It is a republican tradition that, each time, after an election, the loser congratulates the winner. Today, the overwhelming majority of Senegalese people have decided to entrust the destiny of this country for the next 5 years to Mr. Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Therefore, President Amadou Ba, as a convinced republican, could not do anything other than accept our defeat and congratulate the new president that the Senegalese, in their majority, decided to elect.

Another, philosopher, adds: “

In all games, there are those who win and those who lose. You have to know how to win and you have to know how to lose. President Amadou Ba thanked President Diomaye Faye. So, we are not disappointed. We are very happy to have a young president, aged 44, who will provide good governance for Senegal.

 »

A fourth concludes: “

We are democrats. We were born democrats, we will die democrats! President Amadou Ba admitted his defeat: here is democracy! There were no deaths or injuries. We had the best elections. We will move on, so that the new government can concentrate on its work.
