The MiG-31 fighter approaches the American B-1B bomber in the North Pole (Anatolia - Archive)

The Russian Defense Ministry announced on Sunday that it had scrambled a MiG-31 fighter jet after two American B-1B bombers approached the Russian border over the Barents Sea in the Arctic.

The same source added that the two American bombers moved away from the Russian border after the MiG-31 fighter approached.

It is noteworthy that the Barents Sea is a branch of the Arctic Ocean, located off the northern coasts of Norway and Russia. It was known in the Middle Ages as the Muroman Sea, but its current name comes after the Dutch navigator and explorer Willem Barents.

The average depth of the Barents Sea is 230 metres, and it is one of the important sites for fishing and hydrocarbon exploration. It is bordered to the west by the edge of the shelf on the Norwegian Sea side, the Svalbard archipelago to the northwest, Franz Josef Land to the northeast, and Novaya Zemlya to the east.
