48 years after the coup d'état of March 24, 1976, Argentina is preparing to experience a new day of remembrance for justice and truth, and to pay tribute to the victims of the civil-military dictatorship between 1976 and 1983 Mobilizations are planned throughout the country, and a heavy climate reigns around this day of remembrance, the first since the election of Javier Milei.

The day of tribute to the victims of the military dictatorship in Argentina, this Sunday, March 24, is accompanied by a certain nervousness, which is fueled by the revisionism of

Javier Milei

regarding the crimes of the dictatorship. The Argentine president regularly refers to the state terrorism of the civil-military dictatorship as a “

war

 ” between “

two demons

”. A way of putting into perspective, even justifying the crimes of the dictatorship.

Javier Milei also questions the toll of 30,000 disappeared established by memory organizations, which he accuses of having imposed a truncated account of what happened between 1976 and 1983. During the week, he recorded a television spot which will be broadcast this Sunday and in which he intends to present his vision and his version of this page of Argentine history.

The organizations and activists mobilized today fear a new provocation from the president, which could further strain the situation in the Plaza de Mayo, where the rally will take place in Buenos Aires. And this is especially true since the government has warned that it will put in place its “anti-blockade protocol” to prevent demonstrators from cutting off traffic.

An activist brutally attacked during the week

This day of mobilization also comes a few weeks after the savage attack on a human rights activist. The Hijos association, which brings together children and relatives of the disappeared, revealed Thursday that one of its members had been attacked and sexually abused at her home by individuals who tagged “

Viva la libertad, carajo

 ” (“

Long live freedom , damn

"), Javier Milei's favorite slogan, on the walls before leaving.

In a press release, the association considered that there is a “

clear relationship

” between this attack and the “

actions and hate speech

” of the government of Javier Milei towards human rights activists. Questioned at a press conference, the presidential spokesperson said he hoped that the investigation would progress and that those responsible would pay for their actions. He also said he hopes that March 24 will be a day of peace and reflection for all, while this aggression raises fears that individuals will come to disrupt and try to degenerate the mobilizations.
