Algeria: the political class reacts to the anticipated presidential election

First scheduled for December 2024, the presidential election in Algeria will finally take place on September 7. The electoral body is convened on June 8. The announcement of the holding of an early presidential election surprised the political class in Algeria, where the outgoing president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, cast doubt on his candidacy for a second term.

The announcement of the holding of an

early presidential election on September 7, 2024

surprised the political class in Algeria. The official Algeria Press Service Agency (APS) published a commentary providing what looks like elements of answers to the questions raised by the decision of President

Abdelmadjid Tebboune

.

For the APS, the organization of the presidential election in September is “

a return to normality

”. In 2019, the presidential election was to be held in April, then in July, before being set for December, due to Hirak, a popular protest movement which forced President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to resign. “

President Tebboune’s announcement is therefore the official signal of an end to the crisis

 ,” writes the APS.

The ruling parties, such as the National Liberation Front (FLN) and the National Democratic Rally (RND), welcomed the decision, while the Movement of the Society for Peace (MSP), an Islamist opposition party, called to the holding

of “a transparent and free ballot

”, free from all forms of pressure.

Zoubida Assoul, leader of the opposition party Union for Change and Progress (UCP), is the only one to officially announce her candidacy for the moment, unlike Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who still leaves doubt over his desire to run for a second five-year presidential term.
