  • Monarchies Mary and Federico: the kiss of reconciliation that closes the 'Genevieva case'

  • Royals Frederick X of Denmark: scandals and girlfriends without counting Mary or Genoveva

Mary Donaldson is now queen of Denmark, yes, but she continues to go to the office. Just over two months after the

proclamation

of her husband, Frederick

Fonden,

the foundation that she presides over and that, of course, bears her name, which is married to the head of state for a reason.

Among the main reasons that explain why Mary has been and continues to be, after accessing the throne, the most popular member of the Danish royal family, already the most popular in Europe, what stands out above all is her work at the head of this foundation. This same week, on Thursday, Mary went to the Hvidovre hospital, in Copenhagen, to present an event in which she reiterated her intention to continue working, "as until now", for abused women and for vulnerable children and young people:

" "I will continue to use my platform to raise awareness about what is overlooked,

what is difficult to talk about or understand, to give a voice to those who do not have one."

The foundation was created in 2007 with 1.1 million Danish crowns (about 148.00 euros) from a popular gift, that is, collected among citizens, on the occasion of Federico and Mary's wedding in 2004. Today it has its own funds which amount to almost 200 million crowns (about 28 million euros).

The vast majority of projects are financed through donations from

private partners, while the foundation itself covers a smaller part. Her main areas of interest are bullying, loneliness and domestic violence, that is, what in Spain is known as sexist violence.

It was precisely the latter that the queen focused on during her visit to the Hvidovre hospital. For five years, the foundation has been working on the

Together without Violence project,

which checks pregnant women to detect possible cases of violence by their partners. Wearing prescription glasses with tortoise frames,

soberly dressed in a blue turtleneck sweater

and dark gray pants, she highlighted the importance of this initiative: "Domestic violence has been an area of interest for the foundation almost from the beginning, and we know that it continues being a very taboo problem, often filled with shame and guilt.

Mary admitted that her new role as queen also presents challenges, but she assured that the defense of the "voiceless" will be the workhorse of her reign:

"It is not so long ago that our functions changed significantly,

so we are in the process of adapting." , but my commitment to vulnerable people is what is closest to my heart. And so it will continue."

The fact that the foundation fights bullying led, paradoxically, to Mary's most difficult moment in her time as crown princess. The only time

she received criticism from all directions.

It was when, in 2022, the very serious cases of harassment and assaults, including rapes, occurred for years at the elitist Herlufsholm boarding school, where Christian, his first-born son, was studying at that time, and where Isabella, the second-born, was also going to study. his four children.

At first, Federico and Mary's reaction was reduced to a bland statement in which they limited themselves to asking for "changes" and for the school to guarantee everyone's safety. Public opinion did not understand how it was possible that the princess

was at the head of an organization that fought against mobbing

and, at the same time, sent her children to a center where this harassment reached astonishing levels.

The pressure increased to such a point that the royal couple were forced to admit their mistake:

"It has been a difficult process for our family,

but given the context and our position as crown princes, we have decided that Prince Christian will stop attending Herlufsholm. and that Princess Isabella does not go there."

Since then, with the Genoveva Casanova case conveniently swept under the palace upholstery, and Frederick apparently reconciled with Joachim, his younger brother, after the conflict that arose when Queen Margaret withdrew his sons' titles of princes,

Mary's popularity It has only grown.

So much so that it is not unreasonable to describe her as the most beloved royal in Europe. And she is Australian and of commoner origin.
