Incidents of infiltration across the Jordanian-Israeli border are rare (Associated Press)

The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced, at dawn on Saturday, that it was following up on reports circulated by Israeli media, indicating the arrest of two gunmen in the Palestinian village of Fasayel, after they crossed the Kingdom’s borders towards the Palestinian territories.

The ministry added - in a statement - that it is following up with the Israeli authorities through the Jordanian embassy in Tel Aviv to verify the authenticity of this news.

Last night, Israeli media reported that two gunmen were arrested after they crossed the border into the Palestinian territories, coming from Jordan.

There was no clarification from the Israeli authorities about the details of the incident, or the identity of the detainees.

Infiltration incidents are rare between Jordan and Israel, which have had a peace treaty since 1994.

On July 31, Tel Aviv announced that 7 people had infiltrated from Jordan into Israel, which returned them all to Jordan after declaring a state of emergency in the settlements adjacent to the Jordanian border, coinciding with Israel’s announcement of its thwarting of an arms smuggling operation from Jordan to the West Bank.

Jordan is connected to Israel by 3 crossings: Sheikh Hussein (Jordan River from the Israeli side), King Hussein Bridge (Allenby from the Israeli side), and Wadi Araba (Yitzhak Rabin from the Israeli side).
