The hospital was established in 1928 in the capital of the Chinese province of Henan at the time - Kaifeng, and was a hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine of Henan University. In 1958, the hospital was moved to the current capital of Henan Province – Zhengzhou, and renamed “The First Affiliated Hospital of Henan Medical College”.
In 1985, its name was changed again to "The First Affiliated Hospital of Henan Medical University". With the support of the central government, Henan Medical University, Zhengzhou University, and Zhengzhou Institute of Technology merged, and the hospital was renamed "The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University."

West China Medical Center of Sichuan University is the second largest hospital in the world with a capacity of 4,300 beds. The hospital is located in the downtown area of Chengdu along the banks of the Jin River.
