  • Geopolitics More than 130 countries, including several European ones, recognize the Palestinian State: a declaration of intentions without effect

  • Summit The EU conspires to "intensify" its Defense

The President of the Spanish Government,

Pedro Sánchez

, and his counterparts from Ireland, Malta and Slovenia committed this Friday to recognize the Palestinian State when it is considered the right time to

help peace

.

This was explained by Sánchez in the press conference with which he closed his participation in the European Council held in Brussels and in which he highlighted the relevance of the agreements adopted at the summit.

He specifically focused on the debate on the

situation in Gaza

because he believes that "strong" conclusions were reached that reflect a large part of the Spanish position on the matter.

He highlighted the joint call for a

ceasefire , for the opening of humanitarian land corridors, for the Israeli offensive in

Rafah

not to begin

, to continue supporting the work of the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) and to promote a conference of peace that leads to a

two-state solution

, Israel and Palestine.

Sánchez explained that, beyond these Twenty-seven agreements, he met with his counterparts from Ireland, Malta and Slovenia and they showed their willingness to recognize the Palestinian State.

The statement signed by them indicates that the step will be taken when "I can make a positive contribution and

the circumstances are correct

."

The President of the Government, who already advanced weeks ago his intention to bring the recognition of the Palestinian State to the Spanish Parliament, said that the Council's conclusions grant "greater legitimacy" to taking that step.

In his opinion, it is important that there are countries with governments belonging to different geographical areas and political families that have expressed their willingness to do so and do so jointly.

"I believe that it is

a decisive step to be able to resolve this crisis

, to lay the foundations for security and peace that last over time and for that we have to calibrate well, evaluate well when it will be time for us to take that joint step and recognize to the Palestinian state," he added.

That objective, as he said the statement from the four countries points out "in a somewhat abstract way", will be as some of the elements of this crisis are updated and renewed and, singularly, with regard to the governance of the Palestinian Authority. .

"We will have to calibrate when to take that step, but the decision has been made," he stressed.

Currently, there are

eight EU countries that already recognize the Palestinian State

: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania and Sweden.
