“Lithuania is most of the time the most Russophobic country in Europe. Now Latvia is probably surpassing it. The Balts can change places with each other. But it is clear that Nausėda will say this. Moreover, Nauseda became the first president to participate in the funeral of a mercenary who died in Ukraine. Therefore, he is wishful thinking,” the expert explained.

In addition, as Trukhachev added, Nauseda is doing this on the eve of the elections to the European Parliament, which will be held in 27 countries at once.

“He needs to maintain this level of Russophobic rhetoric before the elections. In addition, he himself has to be re-elected. Every time we hear a statement from a European politician, we need to look to see if he has elections on the horizon,” the analyst said.

Commenting on the Lithuanian president’s statement that the states of NATO’s eastern flank support sending troops to Ukraine, the political scientist explained that in the Baltic states and Poland - yes, but in Finland - with a reservation.

“In the Czech Republic, the current government is yes, the majority of the population is no. Slovakia and Hungary - definitely no, Croatia - yes. Romania goes back and forth, there are a lot of anti-Russian statements there, but there are big questions about Ukraine there too. This measure will be unpopular in Bulgaria,” the expert noted.

At the same time, in his opinion, in Lithuania itself there are big doubts that the majority of Lithuanians are ready to go to Ukraine and die there.

“Only if the USA and Britain go alongside them,” concluded RT’s interlocutor.

Earlier, Nausėda said that the states of NATO’s eastern flank, unlike alliance countries from other regions, support the idea of sending NATO units to Ukraine.

On March 18, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said that he did not believe that the EU countries could agree on the deployment of their troops in Ukraine to help Kyiv in the fight against Russian troops. He made this admission before the start of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
