The draft resolution was submitted by the United States, and more than 120 member states became "co-sponsors" or expressed support.

  The resolution states that countries recognize that "the design, development, deployment and use of artificial intelligence systems are accelerating and technological changes are changing with each passing day, which has the potential to have an impact on accelerating the achievement of the sustainable development goals."

  To this end, the General Assembly is “determined to promote safe, reliable and trustworthy artificial intelligence systems to accelerate progress towards the full realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”.

  The Assembly emphasized that for the purposes of this resolution, “safe, reliable and trustworthy artificial intelligence systems” refer to artificial intelligence systems in non-military fields that must “respect, protect and promote human rights and fundamental freedoms” throughout their life cycle.

  The Assembly also urged all Member States and other stakeholders “not to use or cease the use of artificial intelligence systems that fail to operate in accordance with international human rights law or that pose undue risks to the enjoyment of human rights, especially for those in vulnerable situations”.

  The resolution also states that “the rights that people enjoy offline must also be protected online, including throughout the life cycle of artificial intelligence systems.”

  Countries also recognize that “there is currently a divide in artificial intelligence and other digital technologies, with uneven levels of technological development between and within countries, and that developing countries face unique challenges in keeping up with this rapidly accelerating pace,” the resolution said. challenges, which creates obstacles to sustainable development”.

  The General Assembly therefore “resolved to bridge the artificial intelligence and other digital divides between and within countries” while “urges Member States and invites other stakeholders to take action to cooperate with and provide assistance to developing countries to achieve inclusion and equitable access to the benefits of digital transformation and safe, reliable and trustworthy artificial intelligence systems.”

  The Assembly encourages Member States and invites multi-stakeholders from all regions and countries, within their respective roles and responsibilities, to develop and support regulatory and governance approaches and frameworks related to safe, reliable and trustworthy AI systems.
