United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at a press conference in Brussels (French)

Yesterday, Thursday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned the international community against “double standards” when dealing with the Ukraine and Gaza files.

This came in a press conference held by Guterres with European Union Council President Charles Michel, following the Council meeting in Brussels.

Guterres denounced the "chaotic situation in the world, and the state of impunity, where any state or armed group believes that it can do whatever it wants due to the absence of accountability."

He stressed the importance of adhering to "the Charter of the United Nations, international law, the territorial integrity of states, and international humanitarian law."

He also expressed his regret at the "unprecedented number of civilian casualties in Gaza" during his tenure as Secretary-General.

Guterres noted that "the fundamental principle of international humanitarian law is the protection of civilians."

He stressed that "we must adhere to the principles in Ukraine as is the case in Gaza, without double standards."

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip with American support, leaving tens of thousands of civilian victims, most of them children and women, a humanitarian catastrophe and massive infrastructure destruction, which led to Tel Aviv appearing before the International Court of Justice on charges of “genocide.” ".

As a result of the war and Israeli restrictions, the residents of Gaza, especially in the Gaza and northern governorates, are on the verge of famine, amid a severe scarcity of food, water, medicine and fuel supplies, which has claimed the lives of children and the elderly, according to Palestinian and UN data.
