  • Congress The PSOE presents an abolitionist law on prostitution and challenges Unidas Podemos to support it (05-19-2022)

  • Politics The PSOE declares for the first time in favor of "abolishing prostitution" (10-15-2021)

The PSOE tries to demonstrate that, despite its unstable parliamentary support, this legislature will not be lost.

To achieve this, among other measures, it is expected to re-register this Tuesday in the Congress of Deputies a

Bill to abolish prostitution

despite being aware that it opens a new gap with Sumar.

In Yolanda Díaz's party they are outraged with the proposal both for its content and for its timing.

They accuse her partner in the Government of "gratuitously dividing" feminism for unknown "what purpose" at a time when "it is enough" that it has to be attacked by a "reactionary wave."

In turn, Sumar will have to assume its own internal debate to see how they finally position themselves, because within this "plurinational space" there are souls opposed to the abolitionist line and who are betting on a "pro-rights" perspective for prostitutes.

The

commons

and Compromís are meant here, while the IU tradition is that of repeal.

It could happen that, if there is no consensus, it is decided to allow freedom of vote.

This is the second public clash between partners in less than a week.

In the PSOE they blamed Díaz's group last Wednesday for having endangered the legislature after the

commons

led to an electoral advance in Catalonia by overthrowing the Generalitat's accounts with their negative vote.

The second vice president's team responded by criticizing the fact that Pedro Sánchez immediately resigned from continuing to negotiate the

2024 General State Budget

: "The Government's obligation is to try until the end."

At the expense of Sumar holding his own internal debate on his position, the socialists will absolutely need the support of the PP to be able to approve this initiative at a time when relations between the two majority formations are more tense than ever.

With the rest of the parliamentary partners, it is already taken for granted that they will not be able to count: ERC and Junts voted against the consideration of this same initiative when they presented it for the first time in 2022, while PNV and EH Bildu abstained.

"In an issue like this, what I ask for is common sense and to rise to the occasion," PSOE spokesperson

Esther Peña

defended this Monday , announcing her intention to register it "as soon as possible."

"I don't think any party has the intention of not supporting a law that will make us a better, more egalitarian and, above all, more decent country that ends the exploitation of women," she added.

From the Ferraz leadership they insist that they are demonstrating that they are the only force with a Government vocation "capable of reaching out" and reaching agreements.

To which they add: "This is what we will continue to do regardless of the results of the Basque, Catalan and European elections."
