  • Politics Citizens will challenge Puigdemont's candidacy for failing to comply with the Electoral Law: "He does not reside in Catalonia"

The former president of the Generalitat Carles Puigdemont will reveal this Thursday at a conference in Elna, in the south of France, whether he will present himself as a JxCat candidate in the Catalan elections on May 12.

This has been announced by sources close to him, after in recent days his party has explained that his

number one option to face the 12M elections

is Puigdemont, who, according to his calculations, will be able

to return to Catalonia coinciding with the investiture debate. , towards the end of June,

after the amnesty law had come into force.

The conference will take place

at the Elna City Hall

on Thursday, March 21 at

seven in the afternoon

, a week and a day after the president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, announced the early elections in Catalonia.

Puigdemont has chosen the symbolism of Elna, in North Catalonia - a territory in the south of France with historical and linguistic ties with Catalonia - as the setting for the announcement of his physical and electoral return to Catalonia following the 12M elections. , whose convocation decree will be signed this Monday by Aragonès.

If the forecasts are met and the amnesty law can be definitively approved in the Cortes at the end of May or at the latest at the beginning of June, the former Catalan president hopes that the national arrest warrant against him will be withdrawn.

That would mean that during the 12M electoral campaign he still would not be able to return to Catalonia without risk of being arrested, but things could have changed towards the end of June, dates on which the investiture debate will be held in the Parliament, although everything will depend on how the courts decide to apply the amnesty law.

Gonzalo Boye, Puigdemont's lawyer, assured last Friday that the former president is willing to return to Catalonia when the amnesty law comes into force and to submit to an eventual investiture, even at the risk of being arrested: "He will take his decision to the end" .

Boye stated in RAC1 that once the amnesty law is published in the BOE, the Supreme Court must lift the arrest warrant against Puigdemont for the 'procés' and "a different legal framework" will be opened that would allow him to return.

The lawyer admitted, however, that there is a possibility that the former Catalan president will be arrested - he cannot rule out a new arrest warrant in the Tsunami Democràtic terrorism case - but he stressed that Puigdemont "is going to assume the consequences of his decisions." ".

This Sunday, the general secretary of JxCat, Jordi Turull, opted for Puigdemont as an alternative to the "bipartite of resignation" that, in his opinion, represent the first secretary of the PSC, Salvador Illa, and the president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, of CKD.
