Italy: return to court for four Egyptian agents accused of the murder of Giulio Reggeni

More than eight years after the discovery of the atrociously mutilated body of Giulio Reggeni, near Cairo, the second hearing of the assize trial against four Egyptian secret agents, accused of the murder of this 28-year-old Italian doctoral student, is being held this Monday, March 18 in Rome.

The Regeni family and their lawyers hope that the trial will uncover the truth regarding the assassination of the Italian student, who was finishing his thesis on Egyptian trade unions at the time of his assassination – a very politically sensitive subject in Egypt.

During this hearing, the judges will have to decide on the legal objections raised by the lawyers of the accused of the murder of Giulio Regeni: General Tareq Saber, Colonels Aser Kamal and Hicham Helmi, as well as Commander Magdi Cherif.

Their lawyers believe that they cannot be tried in absentia in Italy, contrary to the decision of the Constitutional Court in 2023. According to this decision, even if the Egyptian authorities refused to provide the contact details of the secret agents to Italy, this does not prevent the application of Italian jurisdiction.

On Sunday March 17, Giorgia Meloni went to Cairo as part of a cooperation agreement between the European Union and Egypt relating, among other things, to migration issues.

On the sidelines of a press briefing, after admitting to not having raised the case of Giulio Regeni with President al-Sissi, she declared: "

There is a trial underway and we will continue to try to obtain something one more thing to move forward on the front of truth and justice
