"Gucuo" is a characteristic name for ancient houses and old buildings in Fujian dialect.

Sanfang Qixiang, located in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, has a long history and is lined with ancient houses.

In the north corner of Three Lanes and Seven Alleys, Lin Juemin’s former residence, which has gone through hundreds of years of vicissitudes, stands quietly in the bustling city.

This typical Fuzhou house not only houses Lin Juemin, one of the "Seventy-two Martyrs of Huanghuagang", but is also the former residence of the famous writer Bing Xin.

In the 1980s, relevant departments in Fuzhou City approved a real estate development company to demolish some buildings of Lin Juemin's former residence in preparation for the construction of commercial housing.

When Xi Jinping, secretary of the Fuzhou Municipal Party Committee who had just taken office, learned of the incident, he immediately asked relevant departments to postpone the demolition.

On March 10, 1991, Xi Jinping presided over an on-site office meeting for cultural relics work at Lin Juemin’s former residence. He overcame all opinions and made the final decision to stop development and solve the problem of protection and repair of Lin Juemin’s former residence.

At the meeting, he emphasized, “We must protect, restore, and utilize the city’s cultural relics in our hands. Not only must they not be damaged, but we must also make them more glorious and pass them on to future generations.”

After thirty years, on March 24, 2021, General Secretary Xi Jinping once again visited the Three Lanes and Seven Alleys Historical and Cultural District in Fuzhou to learn about the protection and restoration of Fuzhou’s ancient houses and Three Lanes and Seven Alleys.

From being “preserved” to being “revived”, the living heritage of Three Lanes and Seven Alleys is now glowing with new vitality.

"Protecting traditional neighborhoods, protecting ancient buildings, and protecting cultural relics means preserving the history and context of the city. We must cherish and respect ancient buildings, old houses, and old neighborhoods."

From local to central levels, General Secretary Xi Jinping has always attached great importance to the protection and utilization of cultural relics and the protection and inheritance of cultural heritage.

Preserving the "root" and "soul" of Chinese national culture is his consistent cultural sentiment.
