Al-Atta: “The transitional period will be supervised by the army commander, along with the police and security (Anatolia)

Yasser Al-Atta, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Army, said that his country's armed forces will not hand over power to civilian political forces without elections.

Al-Atta, who also holds the position of a member of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, was speaking during his meeting with the National Forces Coordination (which includes parties and armed movements) in the Wadi Sidna military region in Omdurman, west of the capital, Khartoum.

Yesterday, Saturday, the private Sudanese newspaper "Al-Tayyar" broadcast a recorded video clip of Al-Atta in which he said, "It will not happen that the army hands over a government to a civilian political force without elections," and stressed that "the transitional period will be supervised by the army commander, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, along with the police and security."

While a statement issued by the Sudanese army, on Saturday, reported that Al-Atta said, “The coming period will witness the spread of the military institution inside and outside Khartoum, and taking the initiative on all fronts.”

The statement explained that the armed forces, at their best, fought the war against the Rapid Support Forces with a strategy of destroying their solid mass in the beginning, and preparing and equipping in parallel for the next stages.

On October 25, 2021, Al-Burhan imposed exceptional measures, including dissolving the Sovereignty and Transitional Councils of Ministers, and declaring a state of emergency, thus ending the participation of civilian forces in power, during a transitional period between the army and civilians following the removal of President Omar Al-Bashir, in April 2019.

Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo “Hemedti,” have been waging a war that has left about 13,900 people dead and more than 8 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.
