Forty-three days before the start, this Saturday March 16,
the electoral commission
put an end to the suspense by revealing the precise timetable for this election.
From the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas to the jungles of southern India
,
from deserts to overcrowded megacities, nearly a billion voters, 970 million to be precise, will be called to the polls in a vote divided into seven geographical areas.
It will begin for some voters on April 19 and end, for others, on June 1.
The results of these elections, which aim to choose the deputies of the lower house of the Indian Parliament, will be known on June 6.
The party or alliance with the most elected officials will then nominate the next Prime Minister.
If successful, Narendra Modi, aged 73, would become the second Indian Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru, hero of independence and first head of government of the country, to obtain a third consecutive term.
