"Does this have a date?"

On June 17, 2015, General Secretary Xi Jinping came to a small supermarket in the service area during an inspection trip to Guizhou. He picked up a pack of "Shaqima" and asked the waiter about the production date of the product.

"Yes." The young waiter replied decisively, but he never found the specific location of the date mark.

"Absolutely," "I said it would be there," "We won't ship it without a date." The waiter, who couldn't find the date for a while, frowned slightly, but still answered simply.

"I can't find it." Xi Jinping said with a smile.

"Here it is! February 12, 2015. The shelf life is 10 months." The waiter who found the date of the product was very excited. Seeing that the product was within the shelf life, Xi Jinping nodded with satisfaction.

In a brief conversation, Xi Jinping asked questions carefully and the waiter answered confidently.

Food safety has always been a top priority for Xi Jinping.

More than 20 years ago, while working in Fujian, Xi Jinping proposed to control "table pollution" and often went to the market in person to inspect material supply and food safety issues.

Someone asked him, generally speaking, leaders will grasp the big ones and let go the small ones, but why would you start from a small dining table?

His answer is that food is the most important thing for the people, so the people's dining table is not a small problem.

After taking office as General Secretary, Xi Jinping has remained as concerned about food safety as ever.

Ten years ago, at the Central Rural Work Conference held in December 2013, Xi Jinping clearly stated that “whether we can give the people a satisfactory explanation on food safety is a major test of our ability to govern.”

In local inspections and surveys since the 18th National Congress, Xi Jinping has always been "serious" about food safety issues.

When he learned about the domestic waste disposal situation in Beijing, he asked, "Where did the gutter oil go?" "You didn't go to make Malatang, did you?"

At a baby dairy company in Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province, he repeatedly mentioned four "strict" requirements for food safety: the most rigorous standards, the most stringent supervision, the most severe penalties, and the most serious accountability.

During an inspection in Guiyang, Guizhou, he warned in the cooked food area of a supermarket: "You must pay attention to food hygiene, mark the production date, and do not sell expired food." In the cold fresh area, he also asked about the cold chain storage and transportation situation, and asked for information on the food that was not sold that day. The cold fresh meat sold should be disposed of accordingly.

Food safety is connected to everyone's health and to the national strategy of building a quality country. It is not only a people's livelihood issue, but also a development issue.

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, from the overhaul of the food safety law to the implementation of two rounds of food safety supervision system reforms, to the inclusion of food safety in the comprehensive evaluation system of leadership teams and leading cadres to ensure "safety on the tip of the tongue", the system has become more complete and measures have become more powerful. .

In October 2022, the report of the 20th National Congress included food safety in the section of "promoting the modernization of national security systems and capabilities, and resolutely safeguarding national security and social stability" for special deployment.

Firewood, rice, oil and salt, three meals a day, are a matter of family and state.

As Xi Jinping said, "Our goal is both ambitious and simple. In the final analysis, it is to let the people live a better life."
