EU proposes relief from CAP environmental rules for farmers

This is the opening of a vast project with the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in Brussels.

The European CAP is coming under pressure from the continent's farmers' movement.

This Friday, March 15, the commission is presenting a new adjustment to the rules, largely to the detriment of environmental constraints.

Some associations are dismayed to see that in the European Commission's proposals, the defense of the environment is sacrificed to respond to a social movement.

The simplification of the CAP has been at the heart of farmers' demands since the start of their movement two months ago.

The European Commission presents the first relaxations of the CAP: land having to be left fallow, crop rotation, the presence of permanent meadows.

All this simplified, therefore;

Exit the obligation, make way for the incentive.

But from simplification to unraveling, the line is tenuous.

This is the fear raised by associations dismayed to see that

the defense of the environment is sacrificed

to respond to a

social movement

.

Especially since the main demand of the agricultural world, that of remuneration, is for the moment confined to only a few avenues of reflection to guarantee them a better income.

However, this is only the start of discussions; this Commission proposal will be discussed by heads of state and government at a summit next week.

The negotiation time will then begin, and it will take time.

It is unlikely that the discussions will be concluded before the European elections in early June.
