The Katara Cultural Village Foundation launched the Katara Award for Manuscripts and Archaeological Places (Anatolia)

The Katara Cultural Village Foundation announced the launch of the Katara Award for Manuscripts and Archaeological Sites in the Arab Region, provided that an Arab country is chosen to be a “guest” in each edition of the award, so that participation in this session is limited to verified manuscripts and research studies on archaeological sites in that country. While participation will be available and open to all nationalities and is not limited to participants from the selected country.

The Kingdom of Morocco was chosen to be the guest of honor in the first edition of the Katara Award for Manuscripts and Archaeological Places 2024, in conjunction with the Qatar-Morocco Year of Culture 2024.

The new award includes two categories: the first is for conducting an investigation of an original manuscript that has not been previously published, and the second category is for the best research study on archaeological places or landmarks in the Arab region, under specific conditions. A specialized scientific committee will be entrusted with studying and evaluating the verified manuscripts and participating archaeological research to choose the best 3 manuscripts. Verified, and the best 3 archaeological research, provided that the works crowned with the award become the property of Katara Publishing House and it has the right to publish and distribute it.

The award indicated that works participating in the first edition of the Katara Award for Manuscripts and Archaeological Places will be accepted starting Monday, March 11, and the last date for receiving entries is 3 months after the date of opening the door for participation in the award.

The award aims to encourage manuscript owners and those with experience and expertise in the field of antiquities to share their collections and research efforts and disseminate them on a wider scale in a way that enhances Arab and Islamic culture, in addition to contributing to encouraging Arab publishing and urging publishers to provide what enhances the advancement of the Arab mind and provides Arab culture with what is new and distinctive. Keeping pace with contemporary issues.

Director General of the Katara Cultural Village Foundation, Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al-Sulaiti, said in a statement that the launch of the Katara Award for Manuscripts and Archaeological Areas comes as a continuation of Katara’s efforts in sponsoring culture and preserving Arab and Islamic heritage, by adding an award that contributes to the achievement of manuscripts with valuable content and helps in disseminating them. And make it accessible to researchers and scholars, which contributes to preserving the cultural and historical heritage of the Arab nation.

Al-Sulaiti considered that shedding light on antiquities in the Arab region as one of the most important elements of the nations’ tangible heritage provides an opportunity to identify sources of historical value that enhance research, expand the circle of knowledge, and promote tourism in the Arab region.

The award committee set conditions for participation in the award, including what is common to the two categories of the award and what is specific to each category separately. Among the general conditions for participation is also the submission of a comprehensive summary of the completed manuscript, as well as for the research study on archaeological sites (two pages minimum), with an attachment. An exact copy of the first and last pages of the original manuscript under investigation, and photos from the site of the archaeological site under investigation.

As for the conditions for the verified manuscripts category, the award’s organizing committee stipulated that research and investigation be conducted for an original, previously unpublished manuscript with Arabic content (written in Arabic). The manuscript that is the subject of research and investigation must have content that constitutes a distinctive addition to Arab culture and human knowledge, and preference is given to manuscripts. Related to Islamic civilization and the bright history of the nation, whether its subject is literary, historical, or religious.

The organizing committee stipulated that the historical scope of the manuscript be the Islamic era with all its known historical stages, in addition to attaching an index of the verified manuscript.

As for the requirements for the category of archaeological areas, the research must show the historical background of the antiquities in question and the cultural impact they left behind, and it must be provided with pictures, shapes, and illustrative drawings of the place or archaeological landmark in question.

The research nominated for the award must be characterized by novelty and innovation, and must not be copied or copied from a master’s or doctoral thesis or from websites and has not been previously published in scientific journals, presented at a conference, or evaluated by another award.

The archaeological research or study must adhere to scientific standards and fulfill their conditions, including clarifying the footnotes, sources, and references on which the researcher relied.

The pages of the archaeological study must be a minimum of 20,000 words, and research with a smaller number of words is not accepted, in addition to attaching a list of references and sources.

The three winners in the verified manuscripts category will receive cash prizes, with the first winner receiving $20,000, the second winner receiving $15,000, and the third winner receiving $10,000.

The winners in the archaeological research category also receive 3 cash prizes. The first winner receives $20,000, the second winner receives $15,000, and the third winner receives $10,000.
