The New York Times said that Democratic members of the US Senate called on the administration of President Joe Biden to stop sending offensive weapons to Israel, until restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip are lifted.

The newspaper added that 7 Democratic members and independent Senator Bernie Sanders sent a letter to Biden in which they stressed that his administration’s continued supply of weapons to Israel violates the Foreign Aid Law, which stipulates stopping military support for any country that restricts the distribution of humanitarian aid.

She indicated that the letter is the latest move within the Democratic Party aimed at intensifying pressure on the president, to use his influence to force Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to change his tactics, and to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip as the war enters its sixth month.

The signatories to the letter in the Senate said that the US administration must make clear to Netanyahu that failure to ensure widespread access to humanitarian aid in Gaza will lead to dire consequences.

Senator Bernie Sanders emphasized in the letter that Netanyahu's actions violate the provision related to humanitarian support in the Foreign Aid Act.

The New York Times quoted Sanders as saying that Israel is preventing American aid from reaching Gazans, in violation of American law, and that this requires suspending financial support for Israel.

The independent US senator expressed his hope that the US President would realize that there is growing dissatisfaction in Congress and among Americans over the destruction of Gaza and the starvation of its residents.
