The formalization of the candidacy of Nicolas Maduro, 61, was expected since the Venezuelan electoral authority (CNE) announced last week the date of the presidential election following talks with the opposition under the aegis of observer countries, notably Norway.

Opponent Maria Corina Machado ineligible

The vote will be held on July 28, the date of his birth of former President Hugo Chavez (1999-2013), of whom Nicolas Maduro is the successor and calls himself the heir of his doctrine, “Chavismo”.

Applications can be officially submitted from March 21 to 25.

The electoral campaign is scheduled for July 4 to 25.

Nicolas Maduro has made numerous public appearances in recent weeks.

The name of the opposition candidate remains unknown for the moment despite primaries largely won in October by Maria Corina Machado with more than two million votes and 92% of the vote.

The Supreme Court, accused of being at the behest of those in power, confirmed on January 26 the ineligibility of Maria Corina Machado for having supported American sanctions against Venezuela.
