EU to recommend opening of accession talks with Bosnia and Herzegovina

Twenty-nine years after the end of the war, the European Commission is preparing to recommend the opening of accession negotiations with Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The former Yugoslav republic would thus become the last Balkan country to be able to begin accession negotiations for entry into the European Union (EU), after being granted the status of candidate country in 2022. Even if the internal political situation continues to worry Europeans.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said on Tuesday that Bosnia and Herzegovina has made more progress in one year than in the last ten years on its path towards membership.

The Commission publishes a report on the enlargement of the Union, where it affirms that on five essential points, “

the country shows that it can respect the accession criteria

”.

Firstly, there is the fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism, the improvement of the management of migratory flows, also the improvement of dialogue and reconciliation programs, then inclusion in national criminal records. the judgments of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

Alignment with foreign and security policy

According to the Commission, there is above all Bosnia's alignment with the Union's common foreign and security policy.

But on this point, European concerns have been clearly expressed in recent days with the successive visits to Sarajevo by the foreign ministers of Italy, Austria and Germany.

They were not sparing in their criticism of the pro-Russian rhetoric of Bosnian Serb President Milorad Dodik.

The Europeans believe that the opening of negotiations with Bosnia would make it possible to anchor the Balkans even more in Europe.
