The management of the company "Airbnb" decided to ban surveillance cameras inside the accommodations rented on its website to protect the privacy of its customers.

The platform, which specializes in renting rooms, apartments, and houses, previously allowed surveillance cameras in shared rooms, such as corridors or living rooms, if they were clearly visible.

However, a number of customers complained on social media platforms about the presence of surveillance cameras hidden in their homes, or in places where privacy is supposed to be respected.

The company - which is headquartered in San Francisco - indicated in a post on its website yesterday, Monday, March 11, 2024, that “this update comes within the framework of the platform’s efforts to rationalize its policy related to surveillance cameras and other devices, and thus protect the privacy of hosts and travelers,” provided that it enters. This policy will come into effect on April 30, with rules related to external surveillance cameras also being tightened.

The post quoted Airbnb official Juniper Downs as saying, “Our goal with these new rules is to provide more clarity to our customers about what they can expect through Airbnb.”

The company explained that it will continue to allow cameras on doorbells and sound intensity measuring devices to protect residential areas.

As for external cameras, it will be mandatory to announce their presence and location before any reservation confirmation, and they will not be allowed in certain places such as closed outdoor bathrooms or sauna rooms, according to the company.
