The three police officers tried for shooting dead a young man in Madrid in 2021 have explained that he attacked them with a "completely gone" knife and, despite the fact that they shot him several times, he did not stop attacking them, so they thought that he

would not They shot correctly or the guns didn't work

.

In the Madrid Court, the jury trial of the three national police officers who killed Kebyn Brayan Peralta Asencio

on November 26, 2021 in his apartment in the Madrid district of

Puente de Vallecas

began this Monday

.

At the hearing it will be necessary to determine whether or not the police officers acted under legitimate defense and whether their actions were disproportionate as proposed by the family of the deceased through the lawyers of the private prosecution.

At the entrance to the courthouse, a group of officers summoned by the Jupol union expressed their support for the accused, and the union's spokesperson, Ibon Domínguez, stated that the police officers "should never have sat before a jury court today," since "They only carried out their police work in the best possible way, in an absolutely professional and proportional manner."

The Prosecutor's Office asks that they be sentenced to

two and a half years in prison

for homicide with the incomplete defense of legitimate defense, the private accusations to ten years in prison, while the defense and the

State Attorney's Office

ask for

acquittal,

according to Efe.

The agents' lawyer, Marcos Navarro, who defends the case on behalf of the Jupol union, will defend their free acquittal when the full defenses of legitimate defense and compliance with duty are met.

This criterion is the same one that the State Attorney's Office has defended.

The three police officers have reported that they went to the apartment because Kebyn's mother had called 091 saying that the young man

"has been very aggressive, upset for some time"

, and that that day he had attacked his brother.

He then took

a knife

and went after them both, so they left the house.

The first of the agents who testified explained that the mother was

afraid

and told them that she "no longer knew what to do" with her son Kebyn;

Another has said that the brother assured them that Kebyn was aggressive, so

they went up with a shield

and opened it with the keys they were given.

Later the brother denied that he said that to the agents.

"The look outside of oneself"

They repeatedly shouted "Kebyn, Police, come out" from the apartment's hallway, until the young man appeared

"with his eyes out of his mind

," according to one agent, and "completely gone," according to another;

Without saying a word, he went towards them with a knife in his hand.

Kebyn gained momentum and managed to put the knife inside the shield to stab them in the head, according to the agents, who explained that he forced them to retreat to the landing of the stairs, threw the shield at them and

tried to stab one of them

who was on the ground.

This agent took out the gun and

fired nine times

, as they later told him, since the young man did not stop.

"He didn't understand anything," he explained when recounting how the young man

seemed to not be hit by bullets

.

"I didn't want to kill, I just wanted him to get away," he added, as the other companions have done, highlighting that after about 40 seconds the young man knelt on the ground, knife in hand and "growling", and then Another companion arrived and managed to subdue him, after hitting him.

The other two police officers have acknowledged that

they shot one and eight times

, respectively, to protect their lives.

One has stated that they believed that they were not hitting him, "or that the guns were not working," because he did not stop and they also

did not see gunshot wounds

.

When the

Samur

arrived he told the injured man to stay still so he could treat him, since he was upset and was not cooperating, as confirmed by two health workers who have testified.

For her part, Kebyn's mother,

María Esther Asencio

, has explained that her son had been nervous for several days,

arguing with his older brother

, she assumes that because he became jealous when the eldest returned to live with them, and that day Kebyn came to take a knife from the kitchen to attack the other, so she decided to leave the apartment with it and call the Police.

"I thought they would come and give him a scare, take him to the cell..." and that's how he would change his attitude, said the mother, who insisted crying that she only wanted "some help," that she assumed that the Police help and that now

he feels guilty about that decision

.

The agents first told her that

the police "are not educators"

and then they asked her for the keys and she became worried when she saw them getting ready.

"Not even two minutes passed when

I heard a lot of shots

; I went up and they were talking calmly," she explained excitedly.
