The per capita share of water in Gaza City decreased from 90 liters to only two liters per day (French)

The Gaza City municipality warned on Monday that the hunger crisis is accelerating and claiming the lives of many Palestinians, noting that the share of water per person has decreased to two liters per day instead of 90 liters before the Israeli war on the Strip, which exacerbates the suffering with the advent of the month of Ramadan.

In a statement to Anadolu Agency, municipal spokesman Hosni Muhanna warned of fears of more martyrs due to hunger and thirst in northern Gaza, if the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Strip continues.

Muhanna also pointed out that this tragic situation increases the suffering of the population, stressing that the food and relief aid that has reached the region is not sufficient to meet their needs.

He added that the per capita share of water in Gaza City decreased to only two liters per day, after it was 90 liters before the Israeli aggression on the Strip.

The Palestinian official attributed this severe shortage to the significant damage to water facilities and networks as a result of the violent Israeli targeting of infrastructure and municipal facilities.

Muhanna explained that the Israeli army destroyed 40 water wells, 9 tanks, 42,000 linear meters of water networks, and 500 valves of different diameters, in light of the lack of fuel necessary to operate the remaining water wells.

He pointed out that the Gaza municipality had not received any quantities of fuel since the beginning of last November, stressing the necessity of providing the necessary fuel for municipalities to provide basic services such as pumping water, operating sewage facilities, collecting waste, and opening streets closed by the rubble of destroyed buildings to the movement of rescue and emergency vehicles.

He explained that the health and environmental conditions in Gaza are extremely disastrous due to the accumulation of 70,000 tons of waste in the streets and neighborhoods of the city, especially in the vicinity of the Al-Shifa Medical Complex, west of the city.

He also pointed out that the Israeli army destroyed one million square meters of the road network in Gaza City alone, which led to the majority of the paved streets being turned into dirt, unsuitable for vehicles due to deep holes in them.

He added that this destruction affected all road components, including electricity and lighting networks, traffic signals, poles, water lines, sidewalks, street islands and squares.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip, which has resulted, as of Monday, in the deaths of 31,122 Palestinians and 72,760 wounded, most of them children and women.

The aggression also caused massive destruction of infrastructure, leaving an “unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe,” according to Palestinian and international reports.
