Ivory Coast: Laurent Gbagbo ineligible, but the only one capable of leading the political fight?

A look back at Laurent Gbagbo's candidacy for the 2025 presidential election in Ivory Coast.

Saturday March 9, the central committee of the African People's Party (PPA-CI) appointed its leader and former head of state to wear its colors next year.

For the PPA-CI, Laurent Gbagbo is today the only one capable of leading this political battle even though he is ineligible.

Why bet on a leader who has currently been removed from the electoral lists?

Finishing “

an unfinished symphony

” is the will of the PPA-CI, indicates Jean-Gervais Tchéidé, the secretary general of the party who brushes aside

the current ineligibility of Laurent Gbagbo

, convicted in

2018

, pardoned and not amnestied in 2022 by the president Alassane Ouattara.

The PPA-CI must soon organize a convention to formalize this decision.

It is a “

political decision

” believes Jean-Gervais Tchéidé. “

His name does not appear on the electoral list, so he is not eligible, we all know that the conviction for the robbery of the BCEAO which is brandished as being the reason he is deprived of his rights, is a purely political condemnation.

»

If his presidential candidacy is validated, Laurent Gbagbo will be 79 years old in 2025 and his age is not a problem, believes the secretary general of the PPA-CI.

We have a President of the Republic who is over 80 years old, we do not pay attention to that, we look at the work he does, we judge his governance and not his age.

Laurent Gbagbo, “natural candidate” of the party

For the party, Laurent Gbagbo is therefore the legitimate natural candidate.

A candidate chosen to win the presidential election, indicates Jean-Gervais Tchéidé.

It’s about going to this competition to win and then carry out our program which was interrupted in 2002 by the rebellion.

»

For political scientist Sylvain N'Guessan, "

Laurent Gbagbo is the only one who has the build to win a presidential election against candidates like Alassane Ouattara and Tidjane Thiam

 ."

Only Laurent Gbagbo is capable of confronting these dinosaurs and therefore it is better to line up behind him and make him what they call their natural candidate,”

adds Sylvain N'Guessan

.

And the second reason is that some say that because of the coup of 2002, the long crisis that followed, Laurent Gbagbo did not execute the program that he was going to bring to power.

And so, it would be a sort of continuity in the implementation of their program, where there was a break from September 2002.

More than a year before the election, neither Tidjane Thiam, president of the PDCI, nor the head of state Alassane Ouattara have commented on their possible candidacy.

Laurent Gbagbo is therefore the first to formalize his desire to run for the presidency of the Republic.
