Retrial: Amid criticism that it takes a long time for trials to decide on a new trial, a bipartisan coalition of parliamentarians was formed to provide prompt relief to victims of wrongful convictions, and established procedures for retrials. We decided to discuss amendments to the law, etc.

The retrial system is stipulated in the Criminal Procedure Law, but it has never been amended for over 70 years, and unlike normal criminal trials, there are no specific rules for how to proceed with the trial, making it difficult to request a retrial. It has been pointed out that the length of the trial is becoming a hindrance to exoneration.

Iwao Hakamada was sentenced to death for robbery and murder in the murder of a family of four in Shizuoka Prefecture 58 years ago, but it took more than 40 years for him to be retried last year. I did.

Under these circumstances, a bipartisan parliamentary group was established by members of the Diet in order to provide prompt relief to victims of wrongdoing, and its inaugural general meeting was held on the afternoon of the 11th.

Shibayama, former Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of the Liberal Democratic Party, was appointed as the chairman of the Diet League, and said, ``The hardships faced by those who were sentenced for innocent crimes are indescribable. When we consider the human rights violations and the hardships faced by their families, we believe that the retrial process should be carried out.'' We need to make thorough revisions," he said.

So far, 134 members of the Diet from both the ruling and opposition parties have announced their participation in the League of Diet Members, and they confirmed their intention to continue discussing matters such as legal revisions.
