We conducted the test with Gemini applications from Google and CoPilot from Microsoft, in addition to the “GPT Chat” application from “OpenAI” (DAL-A).

Muslims all over the globe are preparing to welcome Ramadan, which is considered one of the blessed months and one of the important rituals in the Muslim faith, but this year Ramadan comes and the Islamic nation is witnessing a tragedy that a part of this nation is exposed to in Gaza. In addition to the large number of martyrs and the destruction left behind by the Israeli aggression, the The besieged sector witnessed a clear starvation campaign after the occupation prevented food aid from entering the sector.

At the beginning of Ramadan every year, and especially after the emergence of artificial intelligence tools, the technology page on Al Jazeera’s website began offering Ramadan congratulations, showing what this technology has achieved in this field.

But for the special circumstance this year, we found that it is better for these cards to include the situation in Gaza and how artificial intelligence can help us in making cards that can reflect the reception of the holy month this year with this tragedy. Perhaps it has the ability to create something that expresses the joy inside Muslims about the arrival of... Ramadan and mourning the conditions of the people of Gaza at the same time to raise awareness of this tragedy.

Although at first I was not excited about what I was going to get, the result I got made me certain that some of these tools are heavily biased against the Palestinian issue. This technology, controlled by certain companies, cannot be effective when it comes to our issues as Arabs and Muslims.

Merging joy with sadness and pain

In previous articles, when we made greetings using artificial intelligence, the methodology was fairly easy. It was simply through a command generator or even the GPT chat program, requesting that a command be written for a specific image generation application, whether DAL-A3 or... OpenAI or MedJearney.

The commands were simple, reflecting the joyful atmosphere of the arrival of Ramadan. From the Ramadan crescent to lanterns and mosque minarets, it was not difficult for these applications to create congratulations that were considered quite good to share with friends and family.

But the matter becomes more difficult when we want to combine our joy as Muslims with the arrival of the holy month, but at the same time show what is happening in Gaza in terms of destruction and starvation with these pictures, which certainly cannot, no matter how intelligent they are, reflect what is happening there.

Therefore, it was necessary to work in a different way and to suit the capabilities of each application that generates images, especially since this time we have expanded the number of applications that we are testing. In the past, the “DAL-A” and “Med Journey” applications were the most famous in this field, but now we have done Testing using Gemini from Google and CoPilot from Microsoft.

Gemini is considered the most advanced, according to the technology giant, and it can generate texts, and I used it to try to generate commands for the well-known image generation programs, whether “Dal A3” or “MidGearney.”

Microsoft's Copilot is also an artificial intelligence program for generating text, and it has an internal program called Designer for generating images.

Of course, “GPT Chat” and “DAL-A” are the two famous programs from OpenAI, the first for text generation and the other for image generation.

Does artificial intelligence know that there is a war in Gaza?

First, we needed to test the AI's knowledge of what the people of Gaza are facing with the advent of Ramadan, so we asked AI systems that can build commands for image-generating apps like DAL-A, MadeJourney, and Designer.

Do you know what is currently happening in Gaza?

These were the responses of the artificial intelligence systems:

The good: GPT Chat and D-A The best response

We used the GPT Chat and D-A program to try to draw a card that expresses the month of Ramadan in light of these events. GPT Chat’s response to the events in Gaza was convincing. He said that - according to his last update in April 2023 - the situation there is bad from an economic standpoint.

Of course, this does not include the events of the “Al-Aqsa Flood,” so we found it fair that we help him find out what events he missed, so we uploaded pictures showing the destruction that befell Gaza and asked him to analyze these pictures.

It was, where he described the pictures and tragedy that the people of Gaza are suffering.

After that, we told him that these pictures are from Gaza and we now need him to make a card that captures the joy of the arrival of Ramadan, and at the same time shows sympathy for the situation in Gaza.

GPT Chat surprised us with this response: Given the seriousness and sensitivity of the situation depicted in the images, it is important to approach the creation of the greeting with a deep sense of respect and empathy.

Here's a message meant to honor the spirit of Ramadan while also acknowledging the challenges the people in the photos face.

With some modifications, he was able to show us these expressive pictures that illustrate how the people of Gaza perform Ramadan rituals amidst destruction, darkness, and fear of bombing.

The Bad: Jiminy doesn't know or is he biased?

Google's Gemini model has been repeatedly accused of bias, and has failed to prove that it can provide users with clear and useful answers, but we did not expect it to respond to our question about what is happening in Gaza with this response.

Jiminy: If you want up-to-date information, try using Google search.

I tried to make the question easier for him, and gave him a specific time period from October to February, and he had the same response.

In order to ensure his credibility and whether this response stems from his concern for the user to give a correct answer or is he just biased because the area in question is Gaza, we asked him about what was happening in the United States and Ukraine during the same period, and his answer was a series of different events and he did not refer us to Google. .

From this test, it appears that Google's Gemini program has either lost its memory about Gaza only, or is highly biased towards what its administration wants to show. After many previous failures, the most recent of which was generating images of Nazi soldiers with dark skin, it now shows that it cannot help you. It even lists what's happening in Gaza, and refers you to the search engine when it comes to general information and questions about Gaza.

The Ugly: Copilot understands but does not draw

Microsoft's CoPilot excellently summarized what is happening in Gaza from a humanitarian standpoint. It seems that he used an article from Reuters to summarize the humanitarian situation there, and then he explained the design that he would create for the Ramadan card, but upon implementation, unfortunately, he did not implement the written design well.

It seems that the problem is in the capabilities of the Designer program to implement what was written from Copilot and output it in a beautiful way, so the results were not beautiful and clear.

Anyway, did you come back, Ramadan?

Ramadan this year comes burdened with worries for Muslims who find themselves between two contradictory feelings: joy at the arrival of the month of fasting, and sorrow for the difficult humanitarian situation experienced by the people of Gaza, for whom hunger, rather than fasting, has become a part of their daily lives. The question remains that no one knows the answer to: When will the day come when Will the people of Gaza break their ongoing fast?
