The data from the sports habits barometer, carried out by SPSG Consulting in December 2023,

place paddle tennis, followed by football

, as the two sports most practiced by the Madrid population.

The information indicates a change with respect to the perspective offered by the Sports Habits Survey of Spaniards, published by the Ministry of Culture and Sports in 2022, which placed hiking-mountaineering and swimming in the first two places.

The figures from the specialized consulting firm conclude that 17.8% of Madrid residents play paddle tennis and 17.5% play soccer.

They are closely followed by popular races

, with 16.3%, swimming, with 15.8%, and cycling, with 12.4%.

According to the study, these preferences differ slightly from those of the rest of Spaniards.

They choose running first (23%), followed by swimming (18%), football (17.9%) and cycling (13.7%), with paddle tennis descending to fifth position.

The Sports Habits Survey, carried out by the Statistics and Studies Division of the General Technical Secretariat of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, MCD, together with the Higher Sports Council and the National Institute of Statistics, based on data collected during 2021, points out that the most practiced sports are

hiking-mountaineering

, by 30.8% of the population;

cycling, by 28.4%;

swimming, by 27.2%;

and running, by 19%.

Football is, according to this survey, the eighth most practiced sport, with only 14.5% of the entire population.

The circumstances that produce this disparity in results are varied, including the difference in the period in which the surveys were carried out,

their

geographical scope and the references to the respondents.

Both studies coincide in pointing out sports practice in the Madrid and Spanish populations as a majority activity.

MCD

data set it at 63.1% for men and 51.8%

for women.

For its part, the SPSG study highlights that during the last four years there has been an increase of

16.6% in the practice of football

, while the other four most practiced sports also increase, but to a lesser extent.

The rates of those who play sports skyrocket among the young population, between 18 and 29 years old, up to 80%, while in

the segment of those over 75 years of age it drops to 16%.

The age range also determines sports preferences.

The SPSG Consulting report highlights that football is the sport chosen by young people, while the

population segment between 30 and 59 years old

opts for popular races.

The survey also differentiates the favorite sports for men and women.

Soccer remains king for the former, followed by popular races, cycling and paddle tennis.

Women opt for swimming first

, they coincide with men in running as a second sport, which is followed by gym sports activities such as fitness, different types of gymnastics and maintenance exercises.

The SPSG Consulting study offers data on the sports that have the most follow-up.

A divergence is observed with respect to the most practiced ones.

Football is the most followed (83%),

followed by basketball (39%), tennis (38%), Formula 1 (18%) and cycling (11%), in data that is common to All ages.

In this section, the influence of exogenous factors is observed when considering a sport as a spectacle.

Economic and affinity

ones

are the most common in team sports.

Other circumstances that are decisive for watching a sport are the appearance of outstanding figures, such as

Rafael Nadal and Carlos Sainz

, and sporting events of great importance, such as the Tour de France.

One piece of information indicates the roots that sport has achieved in our society in recent years:

in 2020, a year conditioned by the pandemic

, 59.6% of the Spanish population practiced sport.
