What are the demonstrations for the people in hiding?

Today left-wing groups will demonstrate in Berlin.

It is said that under the motto "Stop state terrorism" they want to "show solidarity" with the recently captured ex-RAF terrorist Daniela Klette and her accomplices Burkhard Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub.

The three ex-terrorists actually would not have managed to live underground for more than thirty years if political like-minded people had not helped them.

But what robust political ideas do the ex-terrorists actually still stand for?

Does anyone of those who are standing up for you today know this?

In 1998, the RAF itself declared its activity as an urban guerrilla to be over in a letter that investigators believe to be authentic.

Since then, the last three ex-terrorists still wanted have probably robbed supermarkets in particular to get money.

Anyone who finds out more about Daniela Klette will learn that she was active against NATO at a young age.

NATO?

It has long since become a protective space for European democracies, as can be seen in the example of Sweden: the day before yesterday, traditionally neutral Sweden officially became a member out of fear of Russia.

Democracy in general: It has been threatened since right-wing extremists have been shockingly successful in sowing distrust against “the system” of the Federal Republic.

The RAF also criticized the system in its political times.

If one side, the far right, hijacks the vocabulary and political goals of the far left, what is left for the latter?

To distance yourself.

And: Democracy needs this “solidarity” above all these days.

The actual Taurus debate is only now beginning

In the middle of last week, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) was also criticized by traffic light coalition members because he did not want to give Ukraine Taurus cruise missiles.

Then came the Taurus wiretapping scandal, which took the discussion in a different direction.

Now the previous discussion is rolling back towards Scholz.

The Union wants to request the government to hand over the weapons system to Ukraine “immediately”.

There are also signs that this motion could be supported by the FDP and the Greens.

That would once again put the traffic light coalition to a serious test.

However, as the ZDF "Politbarometer" published yesterday shows, a majority of citizens support the Chancellor's stance: 59 percent of those surveyed spoke out against the delivery of this weapon, 34 percent in favor.

It looks like the real debate is only now beginning.

The Oscar theme: who doesn't get it

The Oscars will be awarded tomorrow.

It is already clear what will certainly remain of the 2024 Oscars: the disappointment that the Film Academy did not nominate either Greta Gerwig as "Barbie" director or the "Barbie" leading actress Margot Robbie.

“Barbie” is not a rose-colored plastic comedy.

The film is intelligent, funny, enchanting.

And that is thanks to Gerwig and Robbie.

Today's starting question: Which of these countries does not border Finland?

Winner of the day…

...is a refugee family that I really want to tell you about at the end of what has been an exciting week for me.

On Monday I set off to Munich to do some research.

I was waiting on the platform for a late train in the morning.

He arrived suddenly, without announcement.

I grabbed my suitcase and jumped in, forgetting my bag.

Almost everything I needed for the trip was in there: my laptop, my iPad, my wallet with all my ID and cards.

The bag itself was a gift that I was attached to.

I noticed it immediately.

But when I wanted to get out, the doors closed.

I ran to the conductor, who immediately called his colleagues on the platform.

They looked for the bag and couldn't find it.

Diagnosis: probably theft.

Something like this is not a tragedy, but it is annoying.

The accusations against himself, the entire organization: having devices deactivated, blocking the account, all the attempts to get replacement devices and money in Munich.

I also had to cancel the rental car that I actually needed because I wanted to travel outside the city because I couldn't show a driver's license.

My cell phone rang at night.

I was writing the “situation” for the next morning on a friend’s old laptop from Munich.

I kept my cell phone in my hand when I got on the train.

A woman greeted me and said she had tried everything to get my number so I could sleep peacefully.

She is Afghan.

Her father saw me on the platform in the morning: waiting for the train with my bag, getting on the train without the bag.

He took it and asked acquaintances what he should do now.

They advised him to take the money and the equipment and throw the rest away.

He didn't want that, ran away, but didn't dare talk to the people on the train because he didn't speak German.

He asked her, the daughter, to take care of it.

Back from Munich, I picked up the bag from the family the day before yesterday.

She lives in a tiny apartment in a high-rise building in the commercial area.

The daughter invited me in, her mother made us tea, and we sat down on a sofa with a picture frame with a saying from the Koran hanging above it.

The daughter said: They fled to Germany in 2015/16, the typical route: by dinghy to Lesbos.

Today her nightly nightmares still took her back to sea.

They were well received in Germany.

They are grateful.

She got a job as a geriatric care assistant after school.

Your mother is missing teeth.

Her father walks with a cane.

Nothing was missing from my bag.

All the cash, almost 400 euros, was still there.

"This is my finale, my last election": Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has led Turkey for more than two decades, first as prime minister, then as president.

Now he wants to get involved one last time – in the local elections in March.

  • The USA needs up to eight weeks to build a port in Gaza:

A dam made of modules that are built at sea, then pushed to the coast and anchored there: US soldiers are supposed to deliver food, medicine and water to Gaza via a temporary port - but never to go ashore.

  • Pentagon publishes comprehensive study on UFOs:

A whistleblower reported under oath about a recovery program for UFOs.

Now the US Department of Defense has investigated all UFO sightings since 1945.

    The result is clear.

I would particularly like to recommend this text to you today:

How to ruin a giant aircraft:

Two crashes and one near-crash have destroyed Boeing's reputation.

For Boeing it is now a matter of survival.

The company is heavily in debt.

Analysts have calculated that two-thirds of the demand for new aircraft currently goes to Airbus and one-third to Boeing.

Politicians, regulatory authorities and worried customers have been asking themselves why the company, despite all its promises, does not manage to get its security deficiencies under control.

My colleagues Simon Book, Marco Evers and Gerald Traufetter have written about the documents and insider reports that show who is responsible for the misery.

I wish you a good start to the day.

Yours, Susanne Beyer, author of the editor-in-chief
