The destruction inflicted by the Israeli army on Gaza exceeds what happened to Aleppo, Mariupol and other cities throughout history (European)

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to housing, Bala Krishnan Rajagopal, said that the destruction in the Gaza Strip as a result of the Israeli war included 70% of homes, stressing that what is happening amounts to genocide.

He explained - in statements to Anadolu Agency - during his participation in the meetings of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva - that the destruction in Gaza is unprecedented compared to what occurred in other wars in the world, and this includes Aleppo in Syria and Mariupol in Ukraine, and other cities destroyed throughout history.

Rajagopal said that 70% of homes throughout Gaza were destroyed, and the percentage reached 80% in the north of the Strip, in addition to the destruction of the entire civilian infrastructure.

Regarding the decision of the International Court of Justice last January 26 - which demanded that Israel comply with the Genocide Convention, and obligated it to take a set of measures - the UN rapporteur said that Israel “is far from doing so, as it carries out attacks with specific objectives that mean more Murder and destruction."

He added, "Unfortunately, there is no doubt that what began as an armed conflict with some routine violations of the law of war gradually turned into crimes against humanity, and now into acts of genocide."

Regarding the aid that some countries have been airdropping into Gaza since last week, Rajagopal said that it is “very little and ineffective, and not sufficient to meet the real needs of the people of Gaza,” according to information he received from UN relief agencies on the ground.

The UN rapporteur described the inability to deliver the necessary aid to Gaza as a "dangerous failure of humanity."

Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza for 5 months, which as of yesterday, Thursday, has left 30,878 martyrs and 72,402 injured, most of them children and women, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
