The People's Republic of China plans new laws to ensure its national security

Hong Kong presented its draft new national security law this Friday, March 8, which will expand the repressive legal arsenal already available to the authorities there.

An arsenal also supplemented by a new series of laws in mainland China itself.

The Chinese number three did not give details regarding these new laws.

But in the report that he read this Friday in front of the communist delegates, Zhao Leji again expressed the desire to strengthen the “

safeguarding of the sovereignty

” of the country, this via texts which should be promulgated this year.

This package of laws aims to “

modernize the Chinese system

” in many areas, from finance to health, including education, national defense and cybersecurity, said

the press release from the Xinhua news agency

.

This is not the first time that the chairman of the standing committee of the National People's Congress has announced a strengthening of the legal framework in these areas, underlines AFP.

It is even a constant for a regime which has made stability its mantra, while the Chinese president insists in every speech on the prevention of internal and external threats.

This is evidenced by the cybersecurity law promulgated in 2016, which has become the cornerstone of high technology regulation.

This is further evidenced by the recent law on state secrets, which broadened the definition of information considered sensitive.

The report of the ANP standing committee also has an international dimension.

He undertakes in particular to “

strengthen legislation involving foreign affairs and to develop a system of law for extraterritorial application

”, a way in particular of responding to American sanctions.

“

We will use legal means to defend our country in the international arena and resolutely safeguard our sovereignty, security and development interests

,” said the report cited by Reuters.
