Since Monday March 4, in Catalonia, all

women

can obtain reusable hygienic protection free of charge in pharmacies.

Marien Marin, pharmacist in the Les Corts district of Barcelona, explains the three options to choose from to a customer: “

The panties, you wash them and they can last between one and five years.

Or you have reusable napkins too.

Or otherwise the menstrual cup.

Monica García, mother of two teenage girls, is won over: “

Buying tampons or pads is very expensive!

The other day I was shopping and I was just thinking: why isn't this cheaper?

So if these products last at least a year, that’s great!

It saves money!

The region thus wishes to fight against menstrual poverty which affects one in five Catalan women and also reduce the 9,000 tonnes of annual waste generated by single-use protection.

An argument that motivates Gemma Junyent, 19 years old: “

It's a great idea, I'm going to use it, but I haven't yet chosen whether I'll take the cup or the briefs.

In three days, 110,000 women have already requested free protection in Catalonia.
