The Left Party is calling for the situation of single parents to be improved.

This emerges from a six-point paper that is to be decided by the board on Monday.

According to party leader Janine Wissler, many structures are not geared to the needs of the approximately 1.6 million single parents with underage children: “Politicians are still ignoring the concerns and needs of single parents, even though it has been known for many years that they have a significantly higher risk of poverty have."

The catalog of measures includes several key points:

  • Among other things, the Left is calling for “a

    real guarantee of daycare places

,” for example through more federal funding, an expansion of the offering and the abolition of daycare fees.

  • In addition, a

basic security of 328 euros per month

should be paid for all children.

In addition, the Left wants a surcharge for children from low-income families.

  • The state

    maintenance advance

, which is paid for children of single parents who receive no or too little maintenance from the other parent, is to be expanded.

“We demand that the maintenance advance is no longer counted towards the citizen’s allowance,” it says in the paper.

  • The proposal also provides

for higher pensions for single parents

: measures such as a minimum wage of 15 euros per hour or a reform of the rules for part-time employment are intended to improve security in old age.

If the Left Party has its way, single parents should be relieved of household chores.

Currently, they can only apply for help for acute illnesses or after operations.

According to the paper, working single parents with school-age children should be able to apply for “full or partial financing” of household help and use it once a week.
