How to open the door to your child's "heart"

Can a student mental health census form a system that allows all students to undergo mental health census?

On the afternoon of March 7, during the free speech session of the Education Sector Consultative Conference, Ma Huaide, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and president of China University of Political Science and Law, made suggestions to several heads of ministries and commissions present.

In recent years, due to various influences such as family environment, academic pressure, and social information, some teenagers have suffered from mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and study weariness.

Focusing on the topic of adolescent mental health, on March 7, members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference from the education sector met face-to-face with the heads of the Central Propaganda Department, the Central Cyberspace Affairs Office, the Ministry of Education, and the National Health Commission to study how to solve children's "heart" problems.

As a dance teacher at the Art and Sports Center of Beijing No. 2 Middle School, Meng Yan, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and a national first-level director, has been engaged in aesthetic education. She said that there was once a girl in the third grade of junior high school who was planning to apply for an art major but her parents opposed her. Coupled with the high pressure of going to school, I gradually became tired of studying.

The teacher talked to the girl and took her to exercise to relax, which slowly opened the door to her "heart".

"Mental health education is very important to guide children to grow up and become talents." Meng Yan said.

She suggested improving teachers’ mental health literacy, building healthy classroom teaching, and increasing the proportion of psychological education in the teacher evaluation system.

The issue of an inadequate team of mental health teachers aroused heated discussion among the committee members present.

During the investigation, Gao Jinfeng, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and principal of the Experimental Primary School Education Group in Jiangyan District, Taizhou City, Jiangsu Province, found that some schools did not have full-time (part-time) mental health teachers at a ratio of 1:500, and some schools did not even have one. .

“Educate talents first, educate people first, educate people first, educate minds first.” Gao Jinfeng suggested that government departments should plan from the aspects of staffing, professional titles, evaluation and employment, funding, etc., and increase psychological awareness through recruitment, certification examination, job transfer, scheduling, purchase and other measures. Strengthen the popularization training of health teachers and build a scientific education evaluation system.

Li Xiaoxuan, member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and chairman of Yunnan University of Technology and Business, called for increased support for the western region, especially areas with weak mental health resources, in terms of resource allocation, and to promote full coverage of mental health resources in hospitals at the county level and above, with special attention to rural areas in underdeveloped areas. The allocation of full-time (part-time) mental health education teachers in primary and secondary schools encourages third-party organizations to provide mental health services.

Achieve collaborative governance among multiple entities such as families, schools, communities, hospitals, and service agencies to promote the high-quality development of adolescent mental health work.

The "Special Action Plan to Comprehensively Strengthen and Improve Student Mental Health in the New Era (2023-2025)" issued by 17 departments including the Ministry of Education mentioned that by 2025, the proportion of schools equipped with full-time (part-time) mental health education teachers will reach 95% , the proportion of family education guidance service sites that carry out mental health education reaches 60%.

"From the perspective of mental health team building and diverse participation, cooperation with relevant departments has become our focus." After hearing the suggestions from members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Huai Jinpeng, secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Minister of the Ministry of Education, responded.

In response to the mental health service system issue that everyone is most concerned about, Lei Haichao, deputy director of the National Health Commission, said that more than 75,000 psychiatrists have become the backbone of providing mental and psychological services, and school doctors in universities, middle schools and primary schools have also been trained in related abilities. .

The mental health service system is constantly being enriched and service capabilities are constantly improving.

Members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference who attended the meeting also reflected on the phenomenon that children's mental health problems are often ignored in society.

"At present, the whole society has not formed a more tolerant environment for patients with mental illness. Some parents think that it is a shame for their children to have psychological problems. This is not conducive to treatment and recovery." Member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Shanghai Science and Technology Museum Chief Ni Minjing said, “We must eliminate the shame around mental illness.”

Zhang Pingwen, member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and president of Wuhan University, also has a similar experience: "Psychological problems are the same as colds and other diseases. We need to pay more attention, but we should not over-exaggerate them."

"Some of our committee members talked very professionally. In fact, some mental health problems are process-related, not lifelong, and have not reached the so-called disease stage. Therefore, we should strengthen the publicity and education of psychological knowledge and strengthen science popularization." Lei Haichao responded .

Previously, in response to adolescent mental health problems, the "Healthy China Action (2019-2030)" released mental health promotion actions, maternal and child health promotion actions, and primary and secondary school student health promotion actions.

Starting from 2021, the National Health Commission has set up a pilot project to promote children and adolescents' mental health in major public health projects, and organized and carried out pilot work such as social mobilization, science popularization, and screening and evaluation for the promotion of children and adolescents' mental health.

Based on surveys in recent years, Cheng Jianping, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Secretary of the Party Committee of Beijing Normal University, proposed an idea: integrate frustration education into the entire process of school education, strengthen inspirational education, launch a special reading plan for inspirational education, and select a group of books describing outstanding figures. Books with growth stories can improve students’ frustration tolerance.

He suggested establishing a mental health intelligent monitoring system, using artificial intelligence technology to collect information on the true performance of adolescents in their natural state, under the premise of complying with relevant laws and regulations such as privacy protection, to break the limitations of traditional methods such as low reliability and small information types, and improve Validity and accuracy in the detection of mental health problems.

In addition, a personalized psychological support system is established, an intelligent chat robot is developed to provide emotional counseling, and a "close person" is found for the children to accompany them 24 hours a day.

"The foundation for protecting the mental health of teenagers depends on education." said Zhang Zhiyong, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, a professor at Beijing Normal University, and the director of the Education National Situation Survey Center, a national high-end think tank.

In February this year, Zhang Zhiyong went to Yunnan to conduct research on adolescent mental health education.

In Yiliang County, east of Kunming City, Yunnan Province, a private middle school has admitted more than 3,000 special students in 12 years.

These children who have closed their "heart" doors have suffered from depression, anxiety and other psychological problems of varying degrees.

"Without love, there is no education." Zhang Zhiyong discovered that this school holds a reading day every Wednesday, a principal dialogue day every week, and a reading sharing meeting every month.

Walking in the cafeteria, corridors, and library, children can easily pick up a book to read.

There are pianos and all-in-one computers in the corridor.

The communication of love, books, music, and movies permeate this middle school.

Twelve years have passed, and batches of students have emerged from their lonely and closed mental state.

"The most basic and fundamental thing to protect the mental health of teenagers is to provide a harmonious and healthy educational ecosystem for teenagers." Zhang Zhiyong believes that it is best to let students feel the warmth, help and love between people and realize their own value. Psychoeducation.

The heads of the Central Propaganda Department, the Central Cyberspace Administration of China, the Ministry of Education, and the National Health Commission responded to the members’ opinions and suggestions one by one.

"After listening to everyone's wonderful speeches, focusing on contradictions and problems, and carefully analyzing the causes of their formation, it should be said that they are very thorough and very targeted. The opinions and suggestions are also very instructive, and I am very inspired after listening to them." Huai Jinpeng During the consultation, it was stated that the Ministry of Education will work with members to solve key and difficult problems, gradually improve the ability to deal with students' mental health problems, and effectively respond to social concerns.
