Mali: Imam Dicko's CMAS contests its dissolution by the transitional authorities

In Mali, CMAS, the Coordination of Movements, Associations and Sympathizers of Imam Mahmoud Dicko, is dissolved.

The announcement was made officially on Wednesday March 6, in the Council of Ministers.

But CMAS disputes the accusations made against it and does not intend to let it happen.

There was the Observatory for Elections and Good Governance two months ago, the Kaoural Renouveau association last week.

Now, it is the turn of Imam Dicko's CMAS to be dissolved.

The Malian

transitional authorities

accuse the organization of seeking to destabilize the regime and reproach Imam Dicko, in Algeria since the end of December, for his “

 official meetings

” with “

foreign powers

”.

Youssouf Diawara, member of the CMAS national office, is therefore not surprised.

We expected this, given the evolution of the situation in the country

 ,” he asks straight away.

“

There are restrictions on freedom of expression and freedom of association.

So, with the positions that CMAS is taking in relation to the management of the country, it does not surprise us that it is dissolved

,” he continues.

Destabilization

CMAS, a member of the opposition coalitions “Appeal of February 20” and

“Synergy of Action for Mali”

, which bring together political parties and civil society organizations, demands in particular a civil transition and the organization of the 'presidential election.

The latter was initially planned for last month.

No new date has been set.

In the press release from the Council of Ministers, the Malian transitional authorities accuse the CMAS, "

created to work for stability and social peace

", of "

having transformed itself

" into a "

political body of destabilization

" and of "

threat to public safety

 .

Objectives in accordance with the receipt

“

We do not recognize the reasons that were put forward

 ,” contests Youssouf Diawara.

“

The CMAS, in its receipt, is an association of a political nature.

Among its objectives, there is citizen monitoring, the preservation of the rule of law, good governance, the fact of being able to carry out citizen mobilizations... The CMAS has always remained within the framework of these objectives, which are on his receipt.

The fact that we are critical of the current management of the country is what cost us this dissolution

 ,” he regrets.

However, there is no question of giving in.

“

We have avenues of appeal, whether administratively or judicially.

It is the law that allows it and we will use these remedies

,” she continues.

Return of Imam Dicko to Mali

Imam Mahmoud Dicko has been in Algeria

since December

.

He received medical treatment there and met President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in person, which the authorities in Bamako describe as a “

subversive activity

 ”.

Recently, Mahmoud Dicko announced his intention to return to Mali.

The dissolution of his organization and the reasons given sound like a warning from the transitional authorities, with a thinly veiled threat of arrest.

And this could well delay his return to the country.
