Three people close to former US President Donald Trump, including his daughter-in-law, were appointed to leadership positions in the Republican Party - which has become the only candidate to win a presidential ticket in its name - during a meeting of party bodies in Houston (south).

The former president announced in February that he proposed involving Michael Whatley, the party's leader in North Carolina, and former television producer Lara Trump, the wife of his son Eric, in running the Republican National Committee.

He also hoped that Chris Lacivita, an expert in Republican election campaigns, would be appointed CEO of the National Committee in charge of “day-to-day operations.”

The party's 168 delegates gathered in Houston, Texas, responded to Trump's requests without surprises, after the rest of his competitors dropped out of the race to snatch the party's nomination for the presidential elections scheduled for next November.

Whatley had publicly supported Trump's allegations of fraud during the 2020 presidential elections, which were won by Democratic candidate Joe Biden, seeking to win a second term.

For her part, Lara Trump explained that the goal of her appointment is to achieve a major victory in the upcoming presidential election, considering that the choice in voting is between “good and evil.”

Whatley succeeds Ronna McDaniel, who was appointed by Trump in 2016, before relations between them became strained due to electoral defeats and disappointing donations.

Trump is the only one continuing in the race to grab his party's nomination ticket after his rival, Nikki Haley, the former US ambassador to the United Nations, withdrew the day after she suffered a resounding defeat in the primaries on Super Tuesday.

The party will officially choose its presidential candidate at its national conference scheduled to be held in July in Milwaukee in the north of the country.
