The crime of causing death or injury due to dangerous driving was established to punish drivers who intentionally drive dangerously, such as drunk driving or reckless driving, and cause a fatal accident. We are holding a meeting to consider the form of penalties starting from next month.

On the 7th, a second meeting was held at the Ministry of Justice, and hearings were held from four organizations formed by bereaved families who lost family members in the accident.

Among them, the organization said, ``The applicable standards for dangerous driving are abstract, so we would like them to be clarified so that they are implemented in a way that is consistent with common sense among the public,'' and ``We want people to avoid driving while using smartphones and stiffening their muscles.'' There were a number of calls for the law to be amended, such as, ``Why not include diseases as targets?''

Another opinion was expressed: ``Even if dangerous driving does not apply, I would like to see a system that makes driving under the influence of alcohol or speeding more severe than negligent driving resulting in death or injury.''

At the meeting, we will continue to discuss matters such as the need to review the requirements for applying the crime of causing death or injury due to dangerous driving, taking into account the opinions on the 7th, and will summarize the points at issue next time.
