North Korea: Washington ready to change strategy to achieve nuclear disarmament

The United States is moving towards a new approach on the North Korean issue.

In any case, this is what American diplomatic officials have been presenting since the start of the week.

Faced with the failure of discussions to abandon the North Korean nuclear program and the resurgence of tensions on the peninsula, Washington is considering a new method for dialogue with the Kim Jong-un regime.

For the United States, the denuclearization of the North Korean regime remains the objective.

But the American approach to the North Korean question has just suddenly changed, as Mira Rapp-Hopper, Joe Biden

's Asia advisor, announced

 :

“

On the question of how we think about our goals, the United States remains committed to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

But we are ready to consider intermediate steps towards denuclearization.

These steps will make the region and the world safer.

We are ready to discuss with the Democratic Republic of Korea to reduce threats, especially in view of the current situation.

 »

Behind the idea

of “intermediate stages

” lies an abandonment of the policy of immediate disarmament.

From now on, Washington would prefer to grant concessions to

Kim Jong-un

in exchange for a temporary freeze on the nuclear program, as a sign of goodwill.

This step-by-step policy must, however, always lead to the disarmament of the regime.

A change of attitude that worries Seoul.

Indeed, this approach of the Biden administration was the one favored by

Donald Trump

.

The latter then praised an America that was secure in the face of North Korea.

While the

race for the White House

remains highly uncertain, South Korea fears this alignment with the former American president, which some consider an admission of weakness.
