Haiti: the cycle of violence increasingly isolates Prime Minister Ariel Henry

The highly critical Haitian issue is being closely followed in New York, where the United Nations (UN) Security Council met behind closed doors on Wednesday, March 6, to discuss the escalation of violence in the country.

Armed groups again clashed with security forces in the area of Port-au-Prince international airport.

They refuse to let the Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, back into power since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, and are demanding his departure, when he should have left office last month.

The members of the Council thus took stock of the multinational mission led by Kenya which should be deployed in Haiti, as well as on the options for Henry to accelerate the transition.

As

gang leader Jimmy Chérizier, nicknamed "Barbecue"

, warned that the country was headed for civil war and genocide if Ariel Henry did not resign, the UN Security Council met in emergency on March 6.

Jamaica, Kenya, Haiti joined the closed-door conversations.

They took stock of the next steps in the

deployment of the multinational mission

, which has long been delayed by the Kenyan justice system, and whose financing has absolutely not been finalized, even though everyone is aware of the urgency.

Furthermore, the Council has not taken a position on the impasses in which

Ariel Henry

finds himself .

A logistical impasse, since few countries agree to welcome him, and none to take him back to Haiti, and a political impasse: “Barbecue” warned the international community if it continued to support the Prime Minister.

CARICOM (Caribbean Community) seems decided to no longer support it.

And even if the United States claims not to push him to resign, Washington officially asked Ariel Henry to “

accelerate the transition

 ” towards “

free and fair elections

”, suggesting concessions in the interest of the Haitian people.
