Senegal: the presidential election would be held on March 24, before the end of Sall's mandate

The first round of the election could be held on March 24, 2024, in two and a half weeks.

The date was announced this Wednesday evening, after several weeks of political crisis which followed the postponement of the vote initially scheduled for February 25.

The Constitutional Council was opposed to the organization of the election after the end of Macky Sall's mandate.

The Senegalese Constitutional Council estimated that the vote should be held before April 2, the end date of Macky Sall's mandate and not June 2.

In a press release this Wednesday evening, we learn that the Head of State has set the date of the first round of the presidential election for March 24.

The President of the Republic informed the Council of Ministers of the setting of the date of the presidential election for Sunday March 24, 2024

,” said a press release sent by a spokesperson for the presidency.

But “

the Constitutional Council sets a date other than the presidency at the end of March

”, specifies Agence France-Presse, for its part, without further details.

Earlier in the evening, the Council rejected the date of June 2 for holding the presidential election, which had been proposed by participants in last week's national dialogue.

He also rejected the reopening of the list of 19 candidates he had validated.

A wholesale rejection of the conclusions of the dialogue boycotted by a large part of the opposition.

The Constitutional Council recalled that Macky Sall

's mandate

ends on April 2 and that it had asked him to organize the vote as soon as possible, which implied before this date.

Depending on the jurisdiction, the president cannot set a date beyond his term.

The Council was asked by the president to comment on the recommendations of last week's dialogue.

Some candidates for the election had already said that they were ready to do a shortened campaign instead of the regulatory 20 days in order to get to the point.

Furthermore, the government was dissolved this Wednesday evening.

Prime Minister Amadou Ba released from office to campaign for the election, according to the presidency.

He is replaced by the Minister of the Interior, Sidiki Kaba.
