Mali: a fringe of the M5 removes Choguel Maïga from the presidency of the movement

In Mali, Choguel Maïga, current transitional Prime Minister, was dismissed on Tuesday March 5 from his post as president of the June 5 Movement - Rally of Patriotic Forces (M5-RFP) by a section of the movement.

The M5-RFP brought the protest against President IBK three and a half years ago.

After the military coup of August 2020, this vast coalition gradually disintegrated.

The M5 has been divided into two camps for months.

They criticize Choguel Maïga for not being “

up to his responsibilities

”, for not having been able to “

bring peace and cohesion

 ” within the M5-RFP

in Mali,

and deplore that his “

 appointed spokespersons

” make “

insulting and defamatory

” remarks

.

The fringe of the M5 represented by imam Oumarou Diarra, Maître Mountaga Tall and Jeamille Bittar in particular, who had already criticized the “

vertical governance

” of Choguel Maïga, no longer considers him as president of the M5.

But this “

strategic committee

” is not recognized by another fringe: that of Boubacar Karamoko Traoré or Abdel Kader Maïga, who remained loyal to the transitional Prime Minister.

So, are these dissensions the fruit of appetites and resentments linked to positions, targeted or lost, as is suggested in the camp of the head of government?

Deep dissensions within the movement

Last Friday, Choguel Maïga also accused “

certain soldiers

” of being “

on maneuvers to destabilize the movement

 ”.

One of his supporters, Abdel Kader Maïga, explicitly accused Colonel Malick Diaw, president of the

National Transitional Council

, and Colonel Abdoulaye Maïga, government spokesperson, on Tuesday, with particularly virulent and even daring remarks, since they would reveal deep divisions not only within the movement, but also at the top of the state.

In 2022, several of the main M5 executives had already slammed the door.

The internal war continues, with fewer and fewer actors, and more and more noise.

It remains to be seen to what extent this new episode will weaken Choguel Maïga or not.

Rumors about his dismissal from the prime minister's office are recurring.

Until now, the colonels in power have not wished to deprive themselves of his services.
