This is a new twist in the organization of the presidential election in Senegal.

President Macky Sall has set March 24 for the presidential election, the government announced Wednesday March 6 in a press release.

This announcement comes as the Constitutional Council ruled earlier today that the date of June 2, proposed as the new date for the presidential election which was to be held last month, would not be legal since it comes after the end of the mandate by Macky Sall, April 2.

The Senegalese president also dissolved the government on Wednesday and appointed Interior Minister Sidiki Kaba as the new head of government, state broadcaster RTS reported.

Prime Minister Amadou Ba is thus “liberated” from his post to lead the presidential campaign, the presidency announced.
