The Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), created in 1983, finds itself increasingly in turmoil.

New confidential reports point to the management of the president of the ECCAS Commission, Gilberto da Piedade Verissimo.

The Angolan, already highly contested internally by some of the agents, is subject to a heavy sanction.

is subject to a motion of absence.

A sanction meaning that the Angolan did not carry out his missions.

This shows that he is out of place and does not have sufficient skills

,” confides a commission executive.

Upon his arrival in 2020, the diplomat was given multiple tasks, including adopting internal regulations and specifying the tasks of several senior officials.

But nothing would have been done.

Worse, since 2020, tension has been high internally.

The agents complain of its management being both authoritarian and opaque, in violation of procedures.

The matter has been escalated to high levels.

And an expert report highlighted shortcomings, notably “

the weak implementation of the recommendations

” of the

ECCAS

.

On February 26, the organization's chiefs of staff confirmed the motion, "

in view of the results falling short of assigned tasks

," their meeting minutes said.

Added to this was a very critical report from Finance Ministers, diplomatic incidents and increasingly disorganized internal functioning.

No one manages to carry out their missions.

It blocks everything

,” confides a disgruntled employee.

The sanction is therefore on the table and will be examined today by the ambassadors of the Member States, before the ministers.

Finally, the heads of state will have to decide on Saturday.

If they adopt the motion, it will be a first in the history of ECCAS which is more than 40 years old.

And with such a disavowal, Gilberto da Piedade Verissimo can only resign

,” confides a good source.
