Donald Trump has done it again - with victories in all but one state, he has come a significant step closer to his goal of running for president again in the major primary round.

Donald Trump, former president:

“Thank you very much.

They don't call it Super Tuesday for nothing.

This is a huge number.”

Roland Nelles, DER SPIEGEL:

»

One could say that the actual election campaign between Joe Biden and Donald Trump has now opened with this Super Tuesday.

So you can already tell that Trump is now clearly focusing on Joe Biden.

Of course, all the money from the Republicans will now flow towards the Democrats.

That means they will use the money they have at their disposal to attack the Democrats, to attack Joe Biden in advertisements on social media, but also on television.

The attacks were not long in coming.

Trump already used his victory speech to stir up fear, especially with the issue of migration:

Donald Trump, former president:

»The things that are now happening at the border are unimaginable.

Millions of people are invading our country.

This is an invasion.

This is probably the worst invasion, we have never seen anything like it.

But we will win this election because we have no other choice.

If we lose the election, we will no longer have a country.

What happens next with rival Nikki Haley, who was able to prevail against Trump in the small state of Vermont - is unclear.

Likewise, whether the votes of their electorate might defect to the Democrats in November or ultimately end up with Trump.

Roland Nelles, DER SPIEGEL

»Nikki Haley, even if she didn't win, managed to appeal to voters in many states that Trump actually needed.

So wealthy, college-educated voters in the suburbs of big cities.

My impression is that Trump has so far made no attempt at all to appeal to these more moderate Republicans.

He makes practically no effort to make himself more attractive to these voters overall.

Trump seems certain that mobilizing his supporters alone is enough to win the election.

That could mean even more polarization in the election campaign.

As many fear, the country is heading for a “rematch between the two old men” in November.

Joe Biden has to fight against his currently weak poll numbers - the next opportunity to do so is the big State of the Union address to Congress on Thursday:

Roland Nelles

»He actually did quite well last year.

And I think it would be an opportunity for him to get back on the offensive a little bit.

Even after Trump’s triumph.

If Biden delivers a good performance at the State of the Union, then that will certainly help him perhaps initiate a small turnaround in the polls.

He hasn’t been able to provide any particularly good data so far.”
