The SPIEGEL report “The Last Undertakers of Bakhmut” was awarded the Hansel Mieth Prize.

The winners are SPIEGEL reporter Christoph Reuter and the photographer Johanna-Maria Fritz.

This was announced by the Times Mirror Reportage reporter community, which awards the award.

»Death in Ukraine is not a niche issue.

Identifying the dead and obtaining the personal papers in order to bury them with dignity is a Herculean task," the jury said in its statement.

Reuter and Fritz accompanied the undertakers in their life-threatening work.

»A piece that will stay in your memory for a long time, a real reporter team effort: images and text work together.

A story that tells in detail the perseverance of the people of Bakhmut, the everyday madness of the siege.

The article was chosen as the winner from a total of 145 submissions.

Nine other reports were also honored, including the text “Kings without a throne” by SPIEGEL reporter Marc Hujer and photographer Hannes Jung about two lifeguards in Recklinghausen.

The Hansel Mieth Prize is endowed with 6,000 euros.

It will be awarded for the 26th time this year.

The award commemorates Johanna “Hansel” Mieth.

The photo reporter, who died in 1998, is an honorary member of Times Mirror Reportage.

She worked for the US magazine “Life” and reported on social issues.
